A Night I'll Never Forget
There are specific moments I’ve experienced in my dancing journey that truly changed how I see the world. Moments that turned dance from something I just did for fun to something I deeply valued.
One of mine goes back to college.
I was at the University of Vermont, newly into dancing, and I’d found a small salsa and swing group that quickly became everything. Most of my close friends came from that community. One weekend, a group of us from the club made the drive up to Montreal for a night out.
We ate together, wandered the city, and eventually made it to a salsa club.

That night is one I’ll never forget.
The music hit differently. The room had an energy I hadn’t felt before; dancers who were experienced, expressive, completely at home in their bodies. It was the first time I understood there was a much larger world out there, and I was just starting to find out.
At some point, I danced with a woman I’d never met. She was beautiful; genuinely, strikingly so and there was something about her presence that I couldn’t shake. The way she moved. Her scent. The warmth between two strangers who don’t share a language but somehow share a moment. Nothing happened beyond the dance. But I remember it clearly, maybe more than anything else from that night.
That’s when something shifted for me.
Dance wasn’t just an activity anymore. It was a way into human connection, into places, into moments you’d never reach any other way. A woman I’d never see again reminded me that connection doesn’t need history. It just needs presence.
We all danced until late, got food, laughed, and drove back as the sun came up over the farmland near the Canadian border. I remember the quiet in the car. Tired. Grateful. A little overwhelmed in the best way.
Dance opened a door that night. On the other side was a fullness of life that I was just learning was possible.
I wish moments like this upon everyone. If you have been thinking about taking class, and you’ve read this far, let this be the thing to remind you to go for it.
