Is He Playing with Arms or Leading a Turn? Here’s How to Tell
There’s a small detail in salsa that can make a big difference when you’re social dancing:
Knowing the difference between a drape and a turn.
Both can involve the arm coming over or around the head, but they feel very different when you know what to look for.
Here’s the simple breakdown:
A turn usually has a prep.
The arm comes from the side and moves across the face as the follower travels through the turn.
A drape is different.
There’s no prep to the side. The arm comes up through the center, close to the head, and moves more vertically.
Think of it this way:
✨ Turn: side → across → around
✨ Drape: center → up → down
This can be especially confusing for followers when the lead gives the signal too late or uses a big preparation for something that’s actually a drape.
For leads, the goal is to make the signal clear enough that your partner knows what’s coming.
For follows, pay attention to the direction and pathway of the lead rather than assuming every arm movement means a turn.
It takes some practice to feel the difference, but once you start paying attention to these details, your social dancing becomes much smoother.
